Miller Farms 2011
My 2nd annual trip to Miller Farms was an even greater success this year! I believe through the month of September their farm is open to the public to pick your own veggies. The cost this year was $10 for five or so plastic bags of food and a couple of pumpkins, which is a really great deal. It's such a great experience for both adults and kids to see all of the hard work that goes into producing our food! It makes you appreciate it even more. It's also a blast for the kids, eating delicious raw corn on the cob picking fresh veggies and it's almost like a treasure hunt. There's also tons of fun games for the kids; old airplanes to sit in, tractors, a jumping thing, a petting zoo, and more. Some things we picked were: onions, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, popcorn, bell peppers, peppers, green beans, and a huge cabbage.
Keira thought this goat was about the funniest thing she ever saw! She was soooo excited and couldn't stop laughing!
Unfortunately I had to work and my friend who was taking Keira back home to Chris for me had to leave so we only had a couple of minutes to see the goats and no time to do the other fun things. Next time!

My New Job
I've decided to take a PRN (as needed) position at my favorite hospital to work at, Avista Adventist Hospital. It's a Level III Trauma center (I being the highest and IV the lowest) and only has 114 beds, the ED only has 15. So it's small and not as busy. It has the highest patient satisfaction rates of any hospital in Denver which I love! I love being able to take excellent care of my patients! Avista got a new nursing director in May who is just awesome and has been begging me to come on since she started! I also love most of the nurses and doctors who work there. It's just a very friendly environment and there's great teamwork, which makes such a difference. Not to brag, but coming from Level I hospitals, I really know my stuff there and everyone really thinks I do a great job!
The disadvantages: The Drive. It's pretty far, about 30-33 miles away from my house (depending on if you take the freeway or scenic route), and usually takes about 35-40 minutes to get there. But I really don't get much free time (unless I stay up super late) and it's a good opportunity for me to call my parents or friends, and to listen to church podcasts. I am also a little nervous to be getting out of the float pool. I'll be taking a pay cut, up to $5 an hour if I can only do days, but I think I think it will be okay. And I'll be able to get overtime for picking up a last minute shift. We've already adapted to living off $30k less per year when we had Keira, what's another $5k? When you make less, you spend less! :o)
Being PRN, my commitment is to work two days every two weeks. And my hope is that around the beginning of the year, I'll only have to work about one day a week unless we want extra stuff or want to travel.
AND I have a fallback! If they don't have open shifts that I can pick up, or if I get bored or whatever, I'm also going to float hours (work at) the new St. Anthony Hospital. There's no commitment and I can pick up whatever, whenever is available. It's a brand new hospital, opened in in June 2011 and it absolutely beautiful!!! It's a Level I trauma center and best of all, it's only 2.5 miles from our house!
I know, you're wondering why I don't just work there. And I will admit, I sure hope I made the right decision. It's mostly because of the high patient satisfaction and the great teamwork and co-workers. Not to mention, it's not as busy and sometimes I have time to check my e-mail, or write blogs at work! Although I'm a little nervous, I've prayed a lot about it and feel like I'm making the right decision. And I might as well be as happy as I can at work if Keira is at daycare. :-(
Speaking of new jobs, Chris has a different position also. He is still a paramedic for AMR, but is no longer working up at Rocky Mountain Fire Department in Louisville. He's now with the flex system again, doing mostly transfers. His new days and hours are Thursday through Saturday 9am-9pm and every other Wednesday. It will be nice for him to have a somewhat regular schedule. And hopefully he'll be able to sleep better at night not having to worry that he'll be awakened for a call. And hopefully this is only temporary and sometime in the beginning of next year he'll be hired on with Arvada Fire Department. :o)
Update: Here's something that was in the Centura news about Avista:
Top Performer: AAH has been named one of the nation’s top performers on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. The program recognizes hospitals that attain and sustain excellent care for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma. To be listed as a “Top Performer,” Avista met or exceeded a 95 percent performanc threshold on quality measures for which it reported data to The Joint Commission in 2010. Congratulations!

Keira at 2 Years Old
Where do I begin? It's amazing how much joy a little two year old provides! Keira is just so much fun! She is such a delight and I can't even imagine my life without her! I can't even chose a favorite "stage"- all of them have been the BEST. But I do think this might be the most fun. She is just loads of fun and super funny and can do so many things! I'm constantly thinking she's hilarious and the cutest thing I've ever seen! She is learning to carry on conversations and is such a good little buddy to me. I'm certainly never lonely or bored!
She weighs 26 pounds (41% percentile) and is 2'10.5" (34.5 inches- 68% percentile). She has all of her teeth up until her two year molars. She usually wakes up around 7:30am, naps from about 2pm-4pm ish, and goes to bed around 8:30pm, or earlier if Chris is watching her. I haven't taken away the paci yet. Probably more for our convenience than anything. After our trip to California she felt she needed it all of the time. She's definitely better now, but she still thinks she needs it for naps, in the car, and at church.
When she woke up from her nap she tucked in Mickey and Minnie right next to each other! Sooo cute!
Keira loves Dora and everything having to do with her. She loves watching and has learned a lot from watching the episodes. She knows all of the characters' names. She says stuff like "the tallest mountain, seat belts- so we can be safe" (I was so impressed, thinking Chris had come up with that one!), "Swiper, no swiping. Oh no, better hurry, Swiper is going to swipe our car." and other weird phases that she's learned from Dora. She's also learning some Spanish words from it. She says "empuhen" (don't know the Spanish spelling) when she's pushing something. One night she said "The moon! La luna!" And I can't remember other ones right now but there are at least five words she knows in both English and Spanish. Pretty much the only things she watches are Dora, and the Leapfrog counting and alphabet movies.
Her favorite toys right now are Dora, her princess figurines, and her animal figurine type things. She likes to play with the giraffe, zebra, and the crocodile mommy/daddy and baby. She loves and plays with something for a few hours or a day and forgets all about it. She loves babies and baby animals and always says "Awwww, so cute!" She is also pretending things are her baby. Yesterday she said "I'm making a grass baby." She also said "I'm a big sister!" (I WISH!!!) She loves swimming, going for walks, playing at the park, being outside, swinging, and sliding. She also loves being carried. She thinks that I'm her personal transportation vehicle and often says "Hold me please. Stand up please." Sitting while holding her is not good enough. Before nap time she often asks to "take nap on mommy's shoulder, with my paci, and blanket?"
She loves to help me and wants to help with everything: loading/unloading the dishwasher, doing laundry, sweeping, dusting, cleaning, stirring, you name it!
She's also becoming more independent. She'll want to do something herself like put her shoes on (which she can with several pairs) but then sometimes can't and becomes frustrated. She just started wanting to dress herself which is disastrous and always ends in frustration.
Pulling up her pants.
She's recently wanted to sit on the potty again. I think because the gift if she used it successfully one more time (a dog stuffed animal) has been staring down at her for the last couple of months. And guess what!!! She did it! She went #1 in the potty!!!
She still loves bows, necklaces, bracelets, socks, gloves and accessories. The other morning while I was cleaning and she was playing in her room, I walked in the room to see about five tiny hair ties around her Soccer Dora's wrist. She also had one around her wrist. It was very cute. Another time I said "Wow, gloves, necklaces, bracelets, bows, you look just like a princess." She said matter of factly, "I AM a princess." Even her crocodiles got necklaces.
She is very observant and complimentary. She always says "Nice dress Mommy" whenever I wear one. She also usually thinks my nightgown is a dress and often the first comment out of her mouth in the morning when she sees me is "Nice dress, Mommy." She always comments on my earrings and necklace too. "Pretty necklace Mommy."
She is very into possessives. She is constantly saying "Is it mine? Is it yours? Is it the chickens?" Or whatever the case may be.
If I tell her not to do something, sometimes she says "Only mommy do it?" And a couple of times she's made me feel a little guilty.
She LOVES Jason. Poor Jason. She loves to hug him, look at his lips, give him toys, follow him around, throw balls down the stairs for him, and especially cover him with a blanket. It is so cute and funny. If he's not right there with us (which he always is) she always asks where he is or walks around the house saying "Jason? Where are you?" or will say "Jason good boy or bad boy?" (He's been helping himself to our couch while we're gone to have a better view looking out the window.
She likes older kids more than younger kids and has finally started playing WITH them. In general it seems like she likes men more than women. She often talks about Grandpa, Uncle John, Jaxon, and Uncle Matthew. She also loves Auntie Laurie (whom she talks about the most) and Grammy. She either calls me Mommy, Mom, or Mama, depending on her mood. And same with Daddy, Dad, or Dada.
She can say many sentences and unless she's whining, I can pretty much understand everything she's trying to say. Here are some of her sentences she said one day...
No thanks. I'm fine.
Watch me, guys!
I'm okay! (Whenever she has a little trip).
Can't go out there. Chickens all over the place.
Mommy have stinky diaper? "No!" I said. Only Keira wears diapers, she said.
Perfect, that's perfect! (One of my favorites, she says perfect a lot!)
(I'm) Not Keira, Dora.
Where are my gloves? "I don't know." I said. They're in my room silly Mommy!
I can't, I have my hands full. When I told her to come sit down for dinner. (She often wants to be carried up the stairs and I tell her I can't carry her because my hands are full.)
You're carrying a lot, aren't we? I reply while we're walking up the stairs, "I'm carrying a lot. What are you carrying?" My mommy giraffe.
To both Jason and her friend Chanley she's said, Not your Mommy, my Mommy!
This is my spoon. And this is your spoon.
It's your special day Mommy!
One for you, one for me.
"Who's tummy is this?" Chris says referring to her tummy. She says, Chicken's tummy!
The day after we got home from Cali while I was at work, Keira and Chris were in the car and she said, Are you driving Daddy? Are you stopping Daddy? Is it motorcycle Daddy? Is it bumpy Daddy? I'm a happy girl Daddy!
It's my scissors. "No, it's Daddy's pliers." No, it's my scissors. Going to snip this paper.
No thanks. I'm fine.

She likes to say things like "also, too" and is starting to say "umm." :-( and "together, each other"- I think she says the same word for both. She's also recently started saying "watch me!" Or "come and find me" and will be hiding behind a couple of leaves. If we're playing hide and seek she's not a fan of being the one hiding. She recently started trying to hide, but she won't really hide and as soon as I say anything she'll say "I'm right here!"
She's pretty good at saying numbers, not quite as good at actually counting things. She always counts way more or less than there actually are. She can count from 1-13 but she usually skips the number eight. After thirteen she says "thirteen, thirteen, thirteen" all proud of herself.
I can't remember what we were doing but she was sitting on my lap and we were looking at something with words. She points to A and says "This is aah." Then she points to Q and says "This is letter Q." She points to M and says "Look M." And then she points to the #3 ands says "3." And then to a 9 and says "1." Pretty good! The little cutie!
She loves to sing! She can sing part or a line of "The Ipsy Bitsy Spider, I am a Child of God, Once There was a Snowman, The Wheels on the Bus, Popcorn Popping, If You're Happy and you Know it, I'm Wishing- Snow White, Part of Your World- The Little Mermaid, and a Whole New World- Aladdin.
Keira loves prayers! (Music to my ears! :o) ) She seldom forgets before a meal (sometimes reminding me), although she certainly doesn't like to wait to pray, and she sometimes sneaks a drink or bite during the prayer. She's getting better about keeping her hands or arms folded and her eyes closed. It's so cute to see her little eyelids squished together so tight and at how hard she works at it. Before bed or naps she usually asks for two to three prayers, probably trying to prolong the inevitable. She's learning how to pray. Sometimes she wants to say the whole prayer and in this super sweet, high pitched, soft voice she says "Heavenly Father, Jesus, Amen." She's also pretty good at our usual repeat-after-me prayers. It just melts my heart to hear her pray.
She's our little two year old cutie!
Discovery Park
September 8, 2011
There's an awesome park in Golden called Discovery Park. It's small but mighty and mighty fun! Our church (and beyond) Mom's Group went there.
Chris surprised us with a visit! I guess there is some good in trackable phones. ;-)
Keira played really well with these girls and followed them all around and wanted to do everything they did. It was really cute.
Keira's 1st Haircut
September 12, 2011
Before. I was so afraid all of her cute curls would be cute off.
Pointing out some letters on the wall.
Nope, curls are still here and better than ever! I'm so glad I got her hair cut! The lady suggested I get some curl enhancer which works great! Unfortunately I have NO experience with curls.
Even I can make it look curly! :o) I LOVE her curly hair!!!
End of Summer Fun
September 5, 2011
Keira was obviously very exciting about an afternoon of aquatic fun with Auntie Laurie, Uncle John, Nicole, Jaxon, and myself!
We went to a great outdoor pool called Pirates Cove in Littleton. I think our kids were a little young for it, but we still had a blast. And I really don't get to hang out with Laurie and John that much which made it even more special!
John, and Nicole and Jaxon tubing down the Lazy River.
Don't I look GREAT with TWO kids!!!!! Jaxon is about six months younger than Keira.
John in SUCH an amazing Daddy to Jaxon! Jaxon is so lucky to have him! John is so cute and just sooo good with him! Not to mention, he watches him all of the time while Nicole is at work and in school, in addition to his police officer full time job.
Keira loves being in the water and us to help her swim all over the place.
Museum of Nature and Science
September 3, 2011
Maria and I had a fun outing to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. For the first time, Keira and Jordan did so well together! It's so much fun! Now our dream is coming true and Jordan and Keira are becoming friends also!
Maria, Jordan, and Keira
Me at age 75 or so. Poor Chris! ;-)
Childcare
September 2, 2011
We made the very hard decision (for me) to start having Keira go to daycare one to two days a week. Unfortunately we didn't have many daycare options because we don't have set schedules and we don't want to keep Keira there longer than needed. Our neighbors told us about a lady they used and really liked who does in-home daycare, and she only lives a few blocks away. It's called Tots ChildCare. She used to be an ICU nurse as well as other specialities, is super flexible, and will take kids from 5am-8pm which is perfect for us. We don't have to commit to any days or number of hours. And she's pretty cheap. She home schooled her children whom now seem very successful. She's been doing daycare for about 13 years. She's middle-aged and a bit eccentric (lots of earrings, blue streaks in her hair) but seems like a good, Christian woman, and is good with the kids. She says she does educational activities with them daily like counting, numbers, colors, shapes, etc. She has trampolines, swings, slides, and tons of fun toys for the kids.
The bad. She's not me. And NOBODY takes better care of my little sweetheart than me! ;-) It seems like she has a lot of kids. I've counted seven. They vary in range from 9 months to four I believe. So it's a bit chaotic at times when I pick her up. Ralaina says that she can handle stress and multitasking very well, which I believe. Everything is baby/kid proofed so I'm not super worried that she's going to get hurt or something. And Keira doesn't need constant attention, in fact, I think it will be good for her not to have it. When I go over there, it seems like Keira mostly hangs out near Miss Ralaina, which is good also.
Keira has gone about four or five time and seems to like it. She talks about going over to Miss Ralaina's house and about her friends over there. And she always says she had fun. But luckily for me, she doesn't like it too much. Although she likes being there, she always asks if mommy can stay there with her also. Once Keira was there during nap time. Miss Ralaina said she slept for about an hour and a half, but she sure acted like she didn't nap, so I think she was in there for that amount of time not sleeping. And she didn't have her paci, which probably means she didn't sleep.
We have decided to do daycare for several reasons. Chris has been very busy. He's finishing up his training rides this month with Arvada Fire Department and that has been crazy. He's also taking a college math class to finish his associates degree which he needs to study for and take tests. And as we know, Chris does not like to watch her for long periods of time.
But it has made things easier for me also. Twice when she's gone over there, it's because I worked the night before, so Chris dropped her off at 6am on his way to work, and then I'm able to sleep for four hours (or more if I needed it) and pick her up around noon or so. And once I even got my haircut while she was over there. So I'm able to actually sleep on the days that Chris works. I'm also thinking that maybe he'll be more willing to watch her for my little fun times like Relief Society Activities so I don't have to ask someone else to watch her, bring her along, or not go at all. And it really has made scheduling easier. Now I'm able to work better shifts at my favorite hospitals because my hours are more flexible. And of course, Chris is loving it too.
I do think that in some ways it's good for her also. She hasn't been the greatest about playing with other kids and sharing. And I'm hoping that this will really help with that. It may also help her become a little more independent and able to play by herself. Ralaina says that she's doing very well and gets along well with the other kids (which I do find slightly hard to believe. I hope she's right!). She also says that she's very smart.
Here's a picture Ralaina sent (without me even asking!) while I was on my way home from work at 8am on her first day there. I was so relieved to get this picture and see how happy she was and that things seemed to be going well. I was actually able to sleep.
Yes, it breaks my heart every time, but I think there are more benefits than not. Hopefully we won't have to do daycare for very long, mostly this semester. And if we continue it next year, hopefully it will be one day a week at most. I think I'm too arrogant and possessive, because I just can't imagine if my kids had to go to daycare all of the time. I am SO thankful that it's only once or twice a week and not for many hours each time, and that I get to take care of her most of the time! I LOVE being a Mom!!!
Garden
August 31, 2011
Our garden somewhat recovered from the hail storms earlier this summer. Gardening is actually quite fun. And next summer will be even better when we re-design our yards! Animals in one, and us and the garden in the other! :o) We'll even be adding a deck! I'm super excited! (And really hoping it will all happen!)
Tomatoes
Strawberries
Spaghetti squash
Bell peppers
And last but not least, little carrots
