As Warned... The Chickens are Here

Six chicks were shipped to the post office and my poor sister had to go get them since I had to work and Chris had to fly to California the morning they arrived.  Poor Laurie was quite embarrassed.  She was carrying Keira in one arm and a box of chirping one day old chicks in the other.
We have five Red Stars (which is a hybrid between a Leghorn and Rhode Island Red) and one Plymouth Rock Barred.  They are living in our old fish tank until they're 5-6 weeks old (or outgrow it).  Then they can go outside.  Hopefully Chris has everything all figured out.
Keira (and Jason) is fascinated by them!
This is Taz.  The first day he (I guess SHE since they're all supposed to be girls) was so mean to the other chicks and kept nipping at their feet.  He also wouldn't lay down, he was running all over the place.  Luckily since then he's become nicer and calmed down.
I have to admit, they're pretty cute and fuzzy!

Ouray Trip

Last week Keira and I had a nice five day trip to Ouray to visit my mom.  A once five hour trip becomes six and a half hours with a toddler and a dog.  On our way there, I hit a major milestone.  It was my first time eating in a restaurant without another adult.  However, I have had to go to a drive through by myself a handful of times in my life.
It was actually pretty fun.  Keira loved holding and drinking from her own cup.  I'll have to introduce that later in the meal next time so she eats more of her food.  She also loves to dip french fries in ketchup.
She did awesome on the drive over.  She slept for the first hour and just played and talked for a long time.  For the last hour and a half I put a movie on.  My sister let us borrow a portable DVD player.  It was fabulous!  Keira loved watching "Nemo."  I think I need one for our longer trips.  And I'd have to get a case thing that hangs over the headrest so she doesn't have to strain her neck to see it.
We won't talk much about our trip because Keira was a little terror.  I don't think she's ever been so bad.  And of all the times to be good...  She would touch things she knows she's not supposed to, she tested me, tried to distract me to get something she's not supposed to have, said "not" and "no" about everything, wouldn't eat, and we'll stop there.
The highlights of our trip were our walks to the park.  She especially liked looking at the fish and turtles in the pond.  Jason enjoyed them too.
Thankfully she did remarkably well on our drive home, despite not taking a nap.  I'm thinking we won't be invited back to Ouray until Keira is better behaved.  ;-(

He's Gone Paleo

For the last several weeks Chris has been doing something called the Paleo Diet.  It's not a diet, but a way of eating like they did back in the day before all of our fabulous technology.  He's really into it.  It's based of the fact that humans used to be hunter/gatherers.  Their food consisted of lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, eggs, and nuts (if they can be eaten raw).  There were no crops such as grain, including cereal, bread, oats, wheat, rice, and corn, and no dairy, legumes, corn, potatoes, yeast, or anything that needs to be cooked or processed.  Which is about 90% of my diet.  Their typical diet was about 29% protein, 38% fat, 33% carbs (not from grains or sugar).

Everything is supposed to be organic, so it's expensive which is a bummer since I've been working so hard and have been saving a lot of money by couponing.  It's also pretty time consuming to "make" something for every meal.  I enjoy grabbing a bowl of cereal for Keira and I every morning.  Luckily Chris has been cooking his own meals.  Probably because of fear that I'll add something he's not supposed to have.  ;-)

As you may have guessed I'm not doing it.  I have enjoyed several of the meals, but it just seems impossible to me.  Not to mention, the whole no grains thing is pretty against the Word of Wisdom.  I really don't know what to do.  I must admit, it's kinda a pain when your spouse is on a diet and you're not and then I feel guilty eating normal stuff.  But I'm pretty certain that I don't have enough will power not to eat any sweets, bread, or milk.  It doesn't bother him though.  I was talking to someone in church today and his family is very into nutrition and eat extremely healthy.  He's also a nurse and has been hearing a lot of the same things, that cancer wasn't even around until grains and that fats really aren't responsible for heart disease.  So I don't know what to do.  I MIGHT give it a try.
One of Chris' most exotic paleo creations.... What's your guess?....
Frog legs.  :-(
DISGUSTING!!!!!!!

On the Home Front

You may notice the bathroom looks exactly the same as 22 days ago.  Yup.
BUT we do have an idea of how we'd LIKE our house to look.  An additional one car garage, the fence extended so we have a humungous back yard, and nicer landscaping.
And here are Chris' latest thoughts for the chicken coup.

My Valentine

My Valentine's buddy giving Ariel a kiss.
For Valentine's Day Keira got a turtle we named Crush and more excitingly Disney princess figurines.  To be honest, I was once very against the princess thing.  But really, who doesn't love Disney?  And I've found that what Keira likes is not really up to me (but I certainly can steer her in the right direction!).
From Grammy and Grandpa she got a Princess book (how perfect was that!) and a Valentine's teddy bear.
It was a beautiful day so we decided to go for a very LONG walk.  Long mostly because Keira wanted to walk the entire 1.2 miles.  The little stinker, a couple of times she sat down because she was tired and would rather do that than me carry her.  Pretty much the only time she fell was in the muddiest part of our walk.
The next day Chris and I got to celebrate with an afternoon at the Colorado Home and Garden Show and a nice dinner!

Laura's 30th Birthday!!!

A couple of weeks ago we celebrated "Laurie Aunt"'s Birthday.  Laura was still recovering so it was a little low key.  We went to the mall and got free makeovers.  Laura's makeup looked awesome!  Keira of course was awake until about the last five minutes.
Aunt Laura is Keira's very best friend.  She just adores her!
We are so thankful to have Laura so close!  She's a wonderful sister and the best aunt I could ever imagine.  There's no one I'd rather have watch Keira than her!

Happy Birthday Laurie!  We LOVE you!!!

My Baby Sweetheart

Snow Day

Well we finally got some snow around here, and it must have surprised everyone since church was even cancelled.  Chris thinks we got about 10 inches.  Keira and I enjoyed the snow while I shoveled!
Welllll she wasn't so sure about it.
 "Help?  Help?"

You wonder what Chris was doing while I was shoveling?  Designing a coup for our next endeavor, chickens...

Bathroom Projects

Well it doesn't look much different than it did a couple of weeks ago.  BUT at least there's a floor!  Although we always had it blocked off good, it was a little scary when the floor was gone since the laundry room below doesn't have a ceiling, so you could totally see (or fall) down.
Just so you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, here's what it's going to look like...
in a few more months.
The reason more work hasn't been done on the master bathroom is because Chris has also been working on the guest bathroom.  Lowe's was having a great sale so we took advantage!  New mirror, medicine cabinet, vanity and top, towel racks.  It's about time!!!  :o)
Here are pictures BEFORE we moved in, just to give you an idea.  We've had this ugly green counter for the last 4.5 years!  Don't worry, the wallpaper has been gone for two years, we retiled the bathtub surround, and the toilet was replaced.  But there's still more to do, new floor tile travertine!), wall touch-ups and hole repairs, and we're thinking about replacing the bathtub since the floor will be gone and everything else will have been replaced.  It's going to be awesome!

17 Months

This is the last month before Keira is a year and a half.  I just can't believe it!  She is just so much fun and is my little buddy!  I'm so amazed that she can do things when I ask her, like throw away trash on the floor, go to her room to get her shoes, sometimes put some of her toys back, get things for me, and so on.  It really is just the most wonderful thing ever to see your child learning, talking, and doing new things.

Keira has quite the personality.  She is so sweet but can be quite a little stinker.  I've realized that she does best when just one person takes care of her and I think when she's with other people (if someone is babysitting her because they always say she was an angel.)  I think when Chris and I are both home or Laurie is over, she doesn't like not having all of the attention or something.  Another reason we NEED another baby, Chris!  :o)  She is usually really happy but will let you know if she's not.

She can ask for a lot of the things she wants which is so nice.  Now instead of getting frustrated she can ask for "help."  Her talking amazes me!  I think one of the reasons that she has such a good vocabulary is because she's so curious and asks "what's that?" to everything.  She tries to repeat almost everything, well the last word of a sentence or an object, and usually does a pretty good job with it.  Some letters she's not good at are Fs and several more that I can't think of right now.  Many of the words she says I wouldn't even understand if they weren't in context.  But she sure tries, and she'll usually say the word until I understand what she's talking about or nod yes if it's the word she said.  She also has a good memory and remembers what so many things are called.  It's so cute to hear her name things when I didn't even realize she remembered what it's called.  If she wants something she usually says "please" and is getting better about saying "up please" or whatever she wants followed by "please".  Today Chris didn't say "thank you" so she reminded him with her form of "you're welcome."  I usually have to remind her to say "thank you" but sometimes she remembers.  She often blesses us when we sneeze or cough.  Yes cough, I know, but when she coughs I just feel like I should say something.  :o)  But sometimes she fake coughs so I'll bless her.  Just yesterday SHE reminded ME twice to say a prayer, a little embarrassing!  What would I do without my little helper!

She actually does like to help, with some things.  She tries to dust, use a sweeping brush, or wipe things with a paper towel, put silverware away, throw away trash, and sometimes put things away.

I'll be so excited to see how Keira's growing later this month.  She's doing better eating now and is too tall for some of her 18 month pants and a sweater.  She has 11 teeth now that she has four molars.  You still can only see the three bottom teeth when she smiles though but I think I know why.  I think it's because the frenulum of the inside of her upper lip attaches low on her gums, so her upper teeth don't show when she smiles.  I need to bring her to a dentist sometime because I think they would want to snip it.  Not sure though.

Her favorite toys are animals and babies.  And she loves books.  Every night she picks out different books for me to read and tries to get me to read as many as she can.  But if the books have too many words she'll want another book or just flip the page before I'm done reading.  Her favorite thing to do is to look at pictures on our phones or computer.  She always says "Pictures? Pictures, babies?"

Keira can run, dance, has jumped twice, can throw balls, climb onto couches and off beds and couches, and can now walk down the stairs without holding on = frightening!  Luckily she doesn't do that very often, usually she uses the wall or railing for support or she's started sliding down on her bottom.  I liked it better when she went down backwards.

Potty training is not going well.  She hasn't actually gone on the potty since I blogged about it, over two weeks ago.  She often says "potty" and sits there for about 30 seconds at the most inconvenient times before she gets bored.  She did have one accident in the bathroom while I was taking a shower.  Pretty much every time I'm in there she suddenly needs to use the potty, maybe because she's playing right by it.  So after she said it several times I decided to undress her and pop her on it.  She hadn't gone a couple of minutes later and had gotten off and I wasn't going to get out of my shower to put her diaper back on, so I left it off.  She was squatting down playing when all of the sudden she started crying and said "dirty" and was trying to bear crawl away.  I looked down and saw she had gone #2.  Luckily it was on the tile and didn't get anything else dirty.  I really need to do more research to see how I'm going to attack potty training.  I kind of feel like she's too young now and can't tell before she needs to go.  I think she tells me after she goes.  But maybe I should just be trying harder.  I'd love to hear any advice!!!

I'd also love advice on another thing.  Keira is still hitting.  I don't know what to do.  It's especially concerning since she's going into nursery at church at the end of the month.  I really hope that since it's a new environment and I won't be there, she'll be really good.  She KNOWS she's not supposed to hit.  It's mostly me she hits and I've really been trying to come down on her, even if she hits me lightly.  I tell her "no, do not hit" or something of that sort very stern and put her in the pack n play for a few minutes with the door closed.  The last time this happened was yesterday and when I went back in there she said "hit."  So she knows what she did wrong and why she was in there.  Before I take her out we have a conversation about why she was in there and I tell her that she can NOT hit, that it's not nice, that it's mean, that it hurts.  But she continues to do it.  In fact, she hit Jason about 10 minutes later.  She hit three times yesterday.  I feel like I need a different type of punishment.  I've thought about swatting her but that might make it worse since she might think I'm hitting her.  Any suggestions, please?  Sometimes it's not one obvious hit.  If I take something that she won't give back, she sometimes flings her arms, hitting me.  Unfortunately sometimes she's just mean.  Sometimes if an older kid is kind of in her face trying to play with her or tickle her or something she'll push them away.  Or if another kid or Jason is in her way she'll push them.  What should I do?  :-(  Hitting, pushing, or being mean to other kids is something I will not tolerate.  I know she's young and most kids do it (besides us Mother), but I don't think she's too young to realize that it's wrong and she can't do it.  And we might as well stop it now before she can actually hurt someone else.  Advice?  Please?  My friend who would have given tons of advice is no longer here, so I need you to step up!  ;-)  You can say anything, it won't hurt my feelings!  If you don't want to leave a comment on here, e-mail or call me!  :o)

Keira loves babies!  This is Nicolas, Mariana's one month old cutie!

All of these pictures are from an indoor playground at a local mall.  It was sooo much fun and perfect for winter.  There were all kinds of fun toys to play on.  I met my friend Mariana there so the kids could play.  Her oldest son Gabriel is two months older than Keira.  Keira talks about him a lot.
She loved the slides!

Sliding down with Gabriel

She's a climber!  Gabriel is seeing if she needs help.  ;-)

Poor Laurie

Sometimes it just seems like she can't catch a break.  Two weeks ago my sister was in an accident and broke her left scapula, injured her left knee, and has many abrasions on her face, arms, and legs.  Her face looks much better and her abrasions are healing.  She still has several bruises and is having a lot of pain in her shoulder.  She's out of work for another month probably and can't even enjoy her time off since she can't do much.  On the bright side, we've been able to spend more time with her.  :o)  Now every time Keira thinks of her or sees a picture of her she says "Laurie, hurt" and sometimes she says "better?"  And then when she thinks she's hurt she always mentions that Laurie is hurt too.  Let's pray for a speedy and full recovery!  I love you Laurie!
